The World Malayalee Council: Structure, History, and the Achievements of Sharjah Province
Celebrating Community, Empowerment, and Global Unity
The World Malayalee Council (WMC) is a testament to the enduring spirit, cultural richness, and global unity of the Malayalee diaspora. Founded in 1995 in New Jersey, WMC has grown from modest beginnings into a robust international body, bringing together Malayalees from all walks of life and across continents. Its mission is to foster a sense of belonging, promote cultural heritage, and empower its members through diverse initiatives—an ethos proudly embodied by the Sharjah Province, one of its most dynamic provincial chapters.
Origins and Global Structure of the World Malayalee Council
The mid-1990s marked a significant period for Malayalees abroad. With increasing migration to the Americas, Europe, and the Middle East, the need for a global platform for community engagement was keenly felt. In response, a group of visionary leaders convened in New Jersey in 1995 to establish the World Malayalee Council. Their goal was not merely to facilitate social gatherings, but to create a dynamic forum for advocacy, networking, and the preservation of their cherished Kerala heritage.
WMC functions on a Three-Tier Hierarchy structure: Global, Regional, and Provincial.
At the apex is the Global Council, which guides the organization’s vision, policy, and international outreach. The highest decision-making body, responsible for setting overall direction, forging international partnerships, and representing Malayalees on a world stage.
Beneath it sits the Regional Council, an intermediary layer that coordinates activities across major geographical zones. Acts as a bridge between global leadership and local chapters, organizing regional events, campaigns, and outreach.
At the foundation is the Province—the heart and soul of the organization—where grassroots engagement flourishes. The entry point for individual members, provinces are the bedrock of WMC. Provinces drive local activities, membership engagement, and community service projects.
This tiered system ensures that every member, regardless of location, is connected to the broader WMC family while remaining anchored in their local context.
Members join WMC at the Province level, allowing for direct engagement and meaningful participation in local initiatives. Each province is affiliated to both the regional and global councils, creating an unbroken chain of collaboration from the local to the international stage.
The Significance of Sharjah Province within WMC
The achievements of the Sharjah Province resonate far beyond its geographical boundaries. By securing two global leadership positions, pioneering first-of-its-kind projects, and nurturing a culture of empowerment and participation, the province has become a role model within the WMC network. Its initiatives have inspired other provinces to adopt similar models, amplifying the overall impact of the Council worldwide.
The Sharjah Province: A Legacy of Leadership and Innovation
Among the many provinces under the WMC banner, the Sharjah Province stands out as a beacon of innovation, inclusivity, and leadership. As one of the oldest provinces, it has played a pivotal role in shaping the organization’s mission and impact, both regionally and globally.
Leadership at the Global Level
A singular achievement of the Sharjah Province is the appointment of its members to two prestigious global positions: the Global President and the Global Youth Forum President. This accomplishment underscores the province’s commitment to excellence and its influence in the broader WMC movement. Their leadership has provided inspiration, guidance, and a progressive vision that continues to drive the Council forward.

It continues to open doors for women to thrive in multiple spheres—encouraging entrepreneurship, skill development, and self-confidence. This project has helped reshape attitudes within the community, fostering a culture where women’s voices are heard, respected, and celebrated.
Youth Engagement: Investing in the Future
With the Youth Forum at its core, Sharjah Province has prioritized youth engagement, understanding that the future of the community depends on cultivating responsible, proactive leaders. Activities like Yoga Day and other youth-centric programs provide opportunities for personal growth, wellness, and social responsibility.
Environmental Stewardship
The World Environment Day initiative is symbolic of a broader commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. By involving members in simple, hands-on actions like plant distribution, the province instils an ethic of care for the earth, ensuring that community development goes hand in hand with ecological responsibility.
